FAGIN

Tuesday 9 November 2021 at 7.30pm

Tickets - £14.25, Ages 15 to 26 - £5

Written and directed by Simon Downing

Produced by Kick In The Head

Dickens failed to provide a backstory to Fagin, so who was he and who was the real man that Dickens based his character on?

Join Fagin as he reviews his situation during his final night inprison before being hanged. As madness envelops him he is ‘visited’ by some oldacquaintances.

Find out who he really was and how he ended up as one of the best known, yet unknown, of Dickens' characters.

“This powerful new play gives a fresh twist on Dicken’s criminal Fagin.”

Think you know Fagin? Think again.

“All three actors in the roles of Fagin (Keith Hill), Bill (Giles Shenton) and Nancy (Georgia Butt) deliver impeccable performances. In the centre of it all, the audience is captivated by Fagin’s diverse, manipulative and complex character.”

The Reviews Hub

“It is a powerful piece of work….it deserves to become an eventual classic.

The set is simple, the themes (of love, greed, deception, betrayal, regret and retribution) universal, the subtle interplay between the three characters intense and the background (Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist) so familiar that this small masterpiece could well be a theatrical staple.” You would be a fool to yourself to miss it.”

Fly Half is a new play with original songs that tells the tale ofa rugby playing steel worker from South Wales. Set in an industrial town, this play is a celebration of working class families who head out to the match each week, stand pitch side with pride, supporting their local team. A lyrical hymn to one man's passion for his family, his town and his beloved game. Fly Half isa story of love, loss, community and sport, that rages against the beige of modern life.

Fly Half was awarded Critic’s Choice of 2018 by British Theatre Guide and BritishTheatre.com

‘It is beautifully written—an extended poem, a free verse epicutilising the alliterative tricks and phrasing of Dylan Thomas to provide arich, aural experience: “him, battered and bruised and beaming”. Fly Half deftly charts rugby’s metamorphosis from the old-style punch of the '60s, '70s and '80s to the professionalism and perfect physiques of the modern game.’

Tuesday 23 November at 11.30am

The journey of parenthood is a magical and maddening one so what better way to cope with it than through stand up comedy! AFTERMIRTH is an adult comedy clubthat you can bring your baby to.

Each week we’ll have 3 top circuit comedians delivering their usual club routines so the material is mature and sweary with the odd birth story flash back.... The only difference is it’s during the day. Babies under 18 months are welcome, but please don’t bring older toddlers because they tend to heckle!

This special afternoon gig has reduced amplification and a dimmed room so no one will notice those red eyes from sleepless nights. You’re encouraged to bottle, breast or Haribo feed and you can walk about or shake Mittens the Special Rabbit in order to soothe your offspring and no one will moan or mutter if your little one cries or screams.

There’s snacks and drinks available in the cafe too so treat yourself to cake and a Prosecco, you deserve it!

The gig is also open to parents, Aunts, Uncles, Grans, carers, in fact anyone who needs some afternoon comedy and doesn’t mind some cute babies in attendance.

POSSIBLE - National Theatre Wales (Ages 14+)

By Shôn Dale-Jones

Friday 26 November 2021 at 7.30pm

Tickets - £15.25, concessions - £13.25

Shôn Dale-Jones’ new show was going to be all about love. But what do you do when you’re writing a show all about love, and everything goes dark? You find the courage to tell a new story.

Possible is a playful, honest and heartfelt piece of storytelling that blurs reality with a kaleidoscopic dreamscape of animation and film, underscored with original live music.

“Perfectly judged, unabashedly authentic and vulnerably autobiographical”

Lunchtime concerts

Our lunchtime concerts at the Riverfront, Newport are back! When we programme these concerts, rather than using established groups, the ensembles are put together from scratch, so they don’t come ready rehearsed. The players have to use the intensive rehearsal process to navigate their way through the stylistic and musical decisions as a collective – a valuable skill for young musicians to develop. For the audience, it means the concerts are completely fresh.

It’s Christmas Eve, high above the streets of Paris a knock at the door begins the timeless love story of poet Rodolfo and his neighbour Mimi. Their fairytale romance feels like a Christmas miracle, but even the heat of their passion can’t defeat the winter chill – Mimi is desperately ill, and Rudolfo and his fellow bohemians can’t afford the help she needs.

From a student garret to the bustling streets of Montmartre, Puccini's masterpiece celebrates the power of love and friendship. Ensemble Cymru perform Puccini’s gloriously evocative score, with some of opera’s best loved arias conjuring Parisian cafes as well as the cold reality of the bohemians’ hand to mouth existence.

MIKE BUBBINS: Throwback

Saturday 19th March 2022 at 8pm

Tickets - £21

Mike Bubbins, star of hit podcast The Socially Distant Sports Bar, and of BBC televisioncomedies Mammoth, Tourist Trap and The Unexplainers, unleashes THROWBACK, his first ever solo UK stand-up tour. And things may never be the same again.

THROWBACK is a powerful, thought-provoking, visceral hour of stand-up comedy, that pushes boundaries, defies neat descriptions and challenges the audience...

AS IF IT IS!

It’s actually an hour and a half of really funny stories, pretty impressive characterisations, possibly a song (he said he’ll see how that goes), a bit of nostalgia about the good old days, a bit of optimism about the good new days, and Mike generally having a laugh about life and not taking himself, or anything else, too seriously. Having said that, he may, at some point in the show, get very annoyed at berks, whether in the past, the present, or the future. Very annoyed.

So basically THROWBACK is a comedy show about Bubbins sharing, and bringing to life, the stuff that he finds funny. As comedy concepts go, it’s a pretty straightforward one, really.

‘They asked me to do a UK comedy tour, called THROWBACK...and so I did.’  Mike Bubbins
