THE MANY LIVES OF AMY DILLWYN

Tickets are free but capacity is limited so please book in advance

Friday 4 March at 1pm & 6.30pm

Suffragist, industrialist, philanthropist;
Amy Dillwyn was a cigar-smoking, adventure-seeking, uncompromising change-maker.
A trailblazing radical ahead of her time. A woman who became a legend in her own lifetime.

This is her story, adapted from her own words as found in her diaries and novels.
Presented at Queen Victoria’s court as a daughter of a radical Swansea MP and friend of the Prince of Wales, Amy was destined for a life as a wife and mother, living on one of the rich estates of South Wales. Amy had other ideas. A best-selling novelist, pioneering industrialist and campaigner for the rights of women and social justice; her ground-breaking public life was only matched in passion by the desires of her private life.

Created, written and devised by Derek Cobley and Sonia Beck, the show will feature Sonia Beck as the inimitable Amy.

The costumes have been designed and made by Ari Bosch (www.aribosch.com) a recent graduate of the Royal Welsh College. It is designed by Derek Cobley, with sound design by Tony Davies of South Wales Audio, and we have benefited from the invaluable help of academic Kirsti Bohata.

This piece is a co-production with The Welfare Ystradgynlais and has been made possible due to a Welsh Government and Arts Council Wales Covid Recovery Grant.

Acts 3 and 4: 50 mins

Reduced orchestration by Jonathan Lyness

It’s Christmas Eve, high above the streets of Paris a knock at the door begins the timeless love story of poet Rodolfo and his neighbour Mimi. Their fairytale romance feels like a Christmas miracle, but even the heat of their passion can’t defeat the winter chill – Mimi is desperately ill, and Rudolfo and his fellow bohemians can’t afford the help she needs.

From a student garret to the bustling streets of Montmartre, Puccini's masterpiece celebrates the power of love and friendship. Ensemble Cymru perform Puccini’s gloriously evocative score, with some of opera’s best loved arias conjuring Parisian cafes as well as the cold reality of the bohemians’ hand to mouth existence.

Lunchtime concerts

Our lunchtime concerts at the Riverfront, Newport are back! When we programme these concerts, rather than using established groups, the ensembles are put together from scratch, so they don’t come ready rehearsed. The players have to use the intensive rehearsal process to navigate their way through the stylistic and musical decisions as a collective – a valuable skill for young musicians to develop. For the audience, it means the concerts are completely fresh.

MIKE BUBBINS: Throwback **New date 4th March 2023**

Saturday 19th March 2022 at 8pm - this show has been postponed until Saturday 4th March 2023 at 8pm

Tickets - £21

Mike Bubbins, star of hit podcast The Socially Distant Sports Bar, and of BBC television comedies Mammoth, Tourist Trap and The Unexplainers, unleashes THROWBACK, his first ever solo UK stand-up tour. And things may never be the same again.

THROWBACK is a powerful, thought-provoking, visceral hour of stand-up comedy, that pushes boundaries, defies neat descriptions and challenges the audience...

AS IF IT IS!

It’s actually an hour and a half of really funny stories, pretty impressive characterisations, possibly a song (he said he’ll see how that goes), a bit of nostalgia about the good old days, a bit of optimism about the good new days, and Mike generally having a laugh about life and not taking himself, or anything else, too seriously. Having said that, he may, at some point in the show, get very annoyed at berks, whether in the past, the present, or the future. Very annoyed.

So basically THROWBACK is a comedy show about Bubbins sharing, and bringing to life, the stuff that he finds funny. As comedy concepts go, it’s a pretty straightforward one, really.

‘They asked me to do a UK comedy tour, called THROWBACK...and so I did.’  Mike Bubbins
